Fife Golf Facts

Uncover surprising and little-known facts about golf in Fife

The Old Course at St Andrews is the oldest golf course in the world - the great game has been played here since 1552.

The starter at Elie & Earlsferry checks the course is clear by looking through the vintage submarine periscope located on the top of the starter’s hut.

Lundin Links Ladies golf course has an unusual hazard on the 2nd fairway: a trio of massive standing stones dating back to prehistoric times.

Founded in 1786 by 11 gentlemen from ‘in and around Crail’, Crail Golfing Society is the seventh oldest golf club in the world.

Danes Dyke, which cuts across Crail Golfing Society’s Craighead Links, was built 1200 years ago by Vikings to keep the local Picts at bay.

The 2027 Open at The Old Course will be the 30th time the world’s greatest golf competition has been played at St Andrews since it began in 1860.

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews was largely responsible for devising the rules of modern golf, including standardising the number of holes.

Lady golfers have enjoyed golf in Fife for centuries – Mary Queen of Scots is credited as the first and played when she stayed at Falkland Palace.

Golfers can’t play the Old Course on Sundays but that’s the one day a week when anyone (and their dog!) can walk across St Andrews’ iconic fairways.

When asked to describe Ladybank, 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie OBE replied: “One of the best heathland golf courses in the UK.”

Burntisland Golf House Club was established in 1895 and its beautiful parkland course is the only Fife course designed by golfing legend Willie Park Jnr.
